Internship or Work Experience: Key Considerations

When can a position be classified as an internship?
Is it possible to follow an internship after graduation?
What are the regulations concerning internship allowances?

The terms “internship” and “work experience” are often used interchangeably, but the Dutch legal framework treats them similarly. While internships are typically associated with formal education programs, they can also be pursued independently of academic studies. An internship provides students and early career professionals with the opportunity to gain practical experience in a work environment, complementing their broader learning objectives.

A legitimate internship should include a structured learning plan with clear learning objectives, and the intern should receive guidance and supervision from the host organization. There is no statutory requirement for a minimum wage during an internship. However, if the intern’s role is limited to performing work tasks without a significant learning component, the arrangement should be classified as an employment contract, entitling the intern to at least the minimum wage.
